Urdu poet Late Janab Zahid Laeeq, Chief Editor of International Multilingual SHAHPARA Canada passed away on 31 October 2008. Zahid Laeeq was the founder of Multilingual SHAHPARA monthly literary magazine and it was his passion of life. He started it within a year after coming to Canada in 2000. When he launched it first time it was in Urdu/Shahmukhi but within a year he made it multilingual – Urdu/Shahmukhi, Punjabi/Gurmukhi, Hindi/Devnagri and English/Roman. He wanted to see SHAHPARA as a shining star in Canada’s multicultural and multilingual mosaic.

Zahid Laeeq was a fine and sensitive mystic poet of Urdu and won hearts of Urdu/Punjabi/Hindi audience by singing his gazals in his golden voice. His poetry mostly gazals sound mystic-romantic dedications to some higher spirituality. He was a kind and carefree mystic ‘darwesh’ wherever he went wherever he read his poetry he touched the hearts of many. Whosoever is familiar with his poetry they know Zahid Laeeq used to be the life of every mushehra/kavidarbar in the Lower Mainland, and his absence is felt deeply each time by his admirers.

Zahid Laeeq publications included three books of poetry – “Ziaey Hira”, “Akas Barmala” in Shahmukhi and  “Aaks Barmala” in Gurmukhi (2007) was awarded with “Certificates of Congratulation” by Honourable MLA Dave Hayer on behalf of Provincial government for the contribution and dedication to Urdu-Punjabi literature in Canada.
